Create

A “found” prayer from the psalter…

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and put a new and right spirit within me. (51:10)

The heavens are yours, the earth also is yours;
the world and all that is in it— you have founded them.
The north and the south— you created them;
Tabor and Hermon joyously praise your name. (89:11-12)

Remember how short my time is—
for what vanity you have created all mortals!
Who can live and never see death? (89:47-48a)

O LORD, how manifold are your works!
In wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
When you send forth your spirit, they are created;
and you renew the face of the ground. (104:24,30)

Let them praise the name of the LORD,
for God commanded and they were created. (148:5)

Let everything that breathes praise the LORD!

Praise the LORD! (150:6)

Cannon Beach was, for me, a place where creation and habitation meet: the power of the crashing tide, the majesty of soaring birds, the rugged endurance of Haystack Rock. It was a place in which to consider the wonder and glory of God and of the intricate harmonies of time and tide woven together by God’s creative hands. This “found” prayer comes from verses in the Psalms that speak to creator, creation, and creature and closing with the psalter’s closing verse—150:6.

Cannon Beach is now among the “thin places” I will remember and long for. What are the thin places that draw you and when you are there, what do you pray?
